Styling Your Family For A Photoshoot

One of the most common questions I get before a family session is, “What should we wear?” And honestly, the answer is much simpler than people expect. The most important thing is that you feel like yourself. Your family session isn’t about perfectly styled outfits or everyone matching head to toe. It’s about connection, movement, laughter, cuddles, and all the little in-between moments that make your family yours. What you wear should support that, not distract from it.

I always suggest starting with comfort. Choose clothes you can move in, sit in, walk in, hug your kids in. If something feels stiff, itchy or too tight, it will show. When you’re comfortable, you relax. And when you relax, the photos feel natural and real.

Instead of matching outfits exactly, think about coordinating colours. Pick a soft colour palette of two to four tones that work well together. Neutrals and earthy shades photograph beautifully – creams, beige, soft browns, muted greens, dusty blues, gentle pinks. These tones keep the focus on your faces and emotions, and they also help your images feel timeless.

Try to avoid big logos, loud graphics or very bright colours. A pop of a colour is always lovely, but it needs to be done with intention. For instance, I wouldn't recommend a bright red with a neon green. Rather if one person wears red, maybe someone else is wearing a muted pink or cream. What we want to avoid is pulling attention away from the connection in the photo.

Simple, classic pieces always work best. Texture is your best friend. Linen, knits, cotton, soft layers – these add depth and interest without being overwhelming. A flowy dress, a chunky knit, a light jacket or cardigan can all bring a beautiful softness to your images. Shoes matter too. They don’t have to be fancy, just clean and neutral. Barefoot is also perfect for more relaxed or at-home sessions.

And lastly, let your personality shine. If you’re a family who loves denim and casual vibes, lean into that. If you love soft dresses and neutral tones, that works too. There is no “right” look – only what feels true to you.

Your session with Sirah Studio is about capturing your family as you are in this season of life. The way you hold each other. The way your kids climb into your arms. The way you laugh together. When your outfits feel natural and comfortable, those moments unfold effortlessly – and that’s where the real magic lives.
